ART 217  History of Art and Architecture 2 - Modernism to Contemporary

At the turn of the twentieth century, Paul Cézanne provided a bridge from the lusciousness of Impressionism to the structure of Cubism and art has never been the same since. This course will follow art as it moves through a world of war and revolution, spawning art movements such as Fauvism, Expressionism, Futurism, Dada, Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism. Philosopher/critic Arthur Danto said that art as it was traditionally known ended with Andy Warhol in the 1960s. This course will examine art from Pop to postmodernism and the context in which it is made and seen. Readings will explore the subject matter from a variety of perspectives, and writing will focus on the language, concepts and research of art writing. Prerequisites: WR 221  or equivalent recommended.  4 crs.
