SCS 364  Feminist and Queer Studies

This course will introduce students to the interdisciplinary fields of feminist and queer studies that challenge normative assumptions about gender, sex and sexuality. It will examine how these categories are culturally constructed and ideologically linked to power, race/ethnicity, nation and class. Highlighting overlapping but distinct histories of these fields, the course will emphasize developing critical thinking skills as students engage contemporary debates in the interdisciplinary study of gender and sexuality. Topics covered will include historical constructions of gender and sexuality, cultural representations of sexuality in media, and the contemporary politics of gender and sexuality. MU Core category: Social Justice. 4 crs.
