SCS 324  Politics of Race in the United States

Explores the history of racial and ethnic formations in the United States as they inform contemporary racial politics and inequality. Drawing on critical race theory, issues of particular focus will include dynamics and legacies of settler colonialism, immigration, slavery, segregation and refugees/asylum seekers. Focusing on the social construction and political manifestation of race and ethnicity in the U.S., students will analyze discourses of multiculturalism, (trans)nationalism, assimilation and identity as they crosscut class, gender, sexuality and religion.   MU Core category: Social Justice. 4 crs.
